Enterprise Application Integration
The vision of eBusiness is the concept of The Virtual
Multi-Enterprise; and its promise is the realization of that
concept, with the expectation of incalculable economic, operational,
and cultural benefits.
These benefits are summarized in the
ideas of revenue enhancement, operational cost reduction, and
increased capital effectiveness through increased capital
efficiencies and decreased capital asset intensities.
Ideally, for now, Legacy Systems should become
well-encapsulated components of new systems in virtual system
architectures.
Legacy Integration is the linking of the
Legacy System to the new system, in this case the Internet, by
exposing Legacy system functionality to New System functionality for
synergistic enablement and mutual leveraging of assets, old and new.
Fundamentally, Legacy Integration is a transition
strategy to reduce cost and increase current availability. It is a
transitional strategy in the sense that old functionality can always be
duplicated by new technology, but at increased cost, time, and disruption.
Ultimately, over time, old systems are replaced or refurbished with new
technologies, usually in an ad hoc, urgency driven, just in time, budget
constrained, and often-messy process of tactically prioritized system
evolution.
